How to calculate time duration
Enter a start and end time. Use 12-hour AM/PM or select a 24-hour clock. The time difference calculator treats an earlier end time as the next day and shows that choice beside the input.
For equal times, the duration is zero. Select Ends next day to count a full 24 hours. A single calculation covers at most 24 hours.
Elapsed time and net worked
Elapsed = end − start + next-day hours
Net worked = elapsed − unpaid break
Decimal hours = net seconds ÷ 3600
Elapsed time: worked examples
Same day
9:00 AM → 5:00 PM = 8:00
With a 30-minute unpaid break, net worked is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 hours.
Across midnight
22:30 → 02:15 = 3:45
Ends next day is selected automatically. A 15-minute break leaves 3 hours 30 minutes.
Midnight and noon
12:00 AM → 12:00 PM = 12:00
12 AM is midnight and 12 PM is noon. In a 24-hour clock they are 00:00 and 12:00.
Which time calculation do you need?
This elapsed time calculator uses clock arithmetic. It does not adjust for dates, daylight saving changes or travel across time zones. Check your actual records when a clock change affects a shift.
For multiple durations use the time calculator. For a week of work use the weekly time card. To change the result's format use hours to decimal.
