Hours and minutes to decimal: the formula

Use the time to decimal calculator by entering whole hours and minutes. Add seconds when needed. Choose 2, 4 or 6 decimal places for the display; the underlying duration does not change.

For the reverse direction, switch to Decimal hours → time. The decimal to hours calculator rounds the result to the nearest second and keeps total hours above 24.

Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600

Total seconds = decimal hours × 3600

Hours = whole seconds ÷ 3600, keeping the remainder as minutes and seconds

Time and decimal hours: examples

7 hours 45 minutes

7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours

The minutes are a fraction of 60, not a fraction of 100.

7.5 decimal hours

0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes

7.5 hours becomes 07:30:00.

7:30 ≠ 7.30

7.30 hours = 07:18:00

The digits after a decimal point describe a fraction of an hour, not clock minutes.

Precision and negative durations

Use a minus sign for a negative duration. For example, −1 hour 15 minutes becomes −1.25 hours. Decimal input accepts up to six digits after the point. Very small decimal durations may round to zero seconds.

Keep the original time when a total matters. Adding rounded daily decimals can differ from adding exact seconds first. The time card calculator adds the daily seconds and rounds only the final display.
